Living Apartment Together

performance
04—07.09.2025

Know thy neighbour...

Living Apartment Together takes place at dusk in the city. A group of spectators look at the side of an apartment block with headphones on. On a life-size projection, scenes unfold that highlight the stirring beauty of our everyday existence. With all the turning points, invisible synchronicity, and realizations that every beginning is nothing more than a sequel.

The façade of an apartment block magically opens up like a can of sardines. We become witnesses to the lives that play out there. One moment it seems as though we are part of it, the next we get the sense that we are listening in from a distance. Meanwhile, the life of the city rages on around us.

This on-location performance is inspired by Georges Perec's fascinating novel, Life, a user's manual. In it, Perec portrays the bizarre, interwoven life stories of the residents of an old Parisian apartment building, in which the lives of (among others) painters, television producers, millionaires, chambermaids, and drivers, play out. For the script of Living Apartment Together, director Yves Degryse conducted interviews in various cities and processed them into scripts together with writer and screenwriter Angelo Tijssens.

BERLIN was founded in 2003 by artistic director Yves Degryse, with Bart Baele and Caroline Rochlitz. Since October 2023 Yves Degryse, Barbara Raes and Melih Gençboyacı have also formed the new artistic direction of NTGent. BERLIN joined the city theatre as a house maker, and from the beginning, it has positioned its work at the intersection between documentary and theatre. Every creation starts from reality. In development, BERLIN does not limit itself to one discipline. The content determines how a story is told: with images, live music, technology, text theatre, as an installation... In 2024, BERLIN celebrated its twentieth anniversary. The foundations for the company were laid in 2003, but it was on October 26, 2004 that Jerusalem, BERLIN's first production, saw the light of day in Vooruit (Ghent).
